What is keratin?

Keratin is a protein made up from a group of amino acids, which are found naturally in skin, hair and nails. Keratin is the first thing depleted when hair is damaged physically, chemically or from environmental factors such as the sun. In human hair, it acts both as an external protective shield and an internal structural protein.

What does keratin do?

Keratin contains cysteine disulfides which are a key structure for the strength and health of your hair. When used in product formulations, keratin helps to strengthen, repair, and revitalize damage. Keratin gives elasticity, bounce, and shine to hair.

What causes frizz?

Healthy hair contains proteins (including keratin), water and lipids that work to moisturize and keep strands strong and smooth. As we age and with damage, our hair loses some of these vital components, making it dry, more porous, and more exposed. In order for hair to compensate for lack of moisture, it absorbs excess moisture from the air (especially in high-humidity environments), causing the cuticle to swell and thus, producing frizz. Brittle, damaged hair may have open hair cuticles which also causes frizz.

Products and services that replenish keratin help to seal the cuticle and prevent humidity from entering the hair.

What is a Keratin Smoothing Treatment?

Keratin Cure Smoothing Treatments are professional treatments that contain keratin, proteins, and other essential ingredients which together can smooth and repair hair. All treatments are performed in-salon by a professional stylist. Smoothing Treatments repair damage and breakage, reduce frizz, reduce curls, and make the hair smoother, healthier, and sleeker. They seal the cuticle which makes the hair stronger and prevents humidity, the main cause of frizz, from impacting the hair. After a Smoothing Treatment, hair is smooth, soft and healthy: The hair is more manageable, blow-drying becomes quicker and easier, and daily styling time is significantly reduced.

What happens during a Keratin Cure Smoothing Therapy treatment?

Keratin Cure Smoothing Treatments utilize a simple, four-step process. Your stylist will first use a special deep-clarifying shampoo to prepare the hair for treatment and to remove residue and buildup resulting from previous hair care products. Next, the selected smoothing treatment is applied; the hair is blow-dried and then flat ironed, sealing in the treatment for a smooth, silky finish. Steps may vary depending on the service performed.

Do Keratin Cure Treatments straighten the hair?

Keratin Cure Smoothing Treatments do not contain any chemical relaxers or chemicals that straighten hair. The keratin, proteins, and other ingredients in our Smoothing Treatments reduce curl patterns in curly, wavy or unruly hair, thus providing a straightening effect without permanently changing the structure of the hair or breaking hair bonds. In addition to being easier to maintain after treatment, your hair will have the versatility to be styled curly, wavy or straight as desired.
It is important to have a clear idea of what your hair goals are, and discuss them with your stylist in order understand the overall results you can expect to achieve with your smoothing treatment.

How long will my treatment results last?

Treatment longevity may vary depending on the selected treatment, your individual lifestyle, and your at-home maintenance regimen. All our treatments except for the The ONE CURE (our smoothing shampoo), may last up to 5 months in some cases. Most treatments have a consistent longevity of 3-4 months. Please remember that keratin treatments are cumulative, the more frequently you receive them, the longer they last. Consistent use of Keratin Cure keratin-enhanced products, including our collection of sodium chloride-free and sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, will help prolong the results of your treatment.
